BRILHANTE
de Conceição Senna, Brasil, 2005, 75’

Em 1977, o filme “Diamante Bruto”, escrito e dirigido por Orlando Senna, flagra em Lençóis (pequena cidade na Chapada Diamantina da Bahia) um lugar arruinado pela decadência dos garimpos, sua única actividade económica. É o fundo do poço de uma crise instaurada pelo esgotamento dos diamantes no início do século 20, quando a cidade contava com 30 mil habitantes. Destes, sobraram apenas quatro mil, e a maioria está na miséria.
Vinte e cinco anos depois, Lençóis é um dos mais promissores centros turísticos do país, seu conjunto arquitectónico foi restaurado e os bairros periféricos, urbanizados. Para os habitantes, o resgate teve início com “Diamante Bruto”, que mostrou a cidade ao mundo. Conceição Senna registrou a memória das pessoas presentes às filmagens, e “Brilhante” conta essa história de amor entre uma cidade e um filme.

The 1977 film “Diamante Bruto” (“Rough Diamond”), written and directed by Orlando Senna, burst on Lençóis (a small town in the Chapada Diamantina area of Bahia). This was a place brought to ruin by the decline of mining, its only economic activity. It was the ultimate slump in the crisis that followed the exhaustion of the diamond deposits at the beginning of the 20th Century, when the town had thirty thousand inhabitants. Only four thousand of these stayed on, most of them living in poverty.
Twenty-five years later, Lençóis is one of the most promising tourist centres in the country. Its architectural heritage has been restored and its surrounding townships have been developed. The rescue of the Lençóis population started with “Diamante Bruto”, which showed the town to the world. Conceição Senna has recorded the memories of the people who appear in the film, relating the love affair between a town and a film.
