Fórum Dockanema
Thirty-three years after independence, surviving among the ruins, our living memories, stored away and our plans for the future, what remains on our internal landscape? Before time and habit make them disappear into oblivion, we must revisit some of it; we need to do some real research so that we create points of reference for the breadth of possibilities in our own memories.
Because the emergence of such signs demand the unleashing of the will for social commitment specific to documentary films, the round tables, conferences and seminars of the Dockanema 2008 Forum propose to explore the diversity of creative angles proper to this genre, its role in creating and regenerating collective memory, as well as the important issue of maintaining it and making it known.
In the mirror of her childhood recollections as a Pioneira of the Cuban revolution, the director Camila Guzman Urzua shows us the disillusionment of present-day Cuban society (“A Cortina de Açúcar” – “The Sugar Curtain”) ; the impressionist collage of archive material in “Também Queremos as Rosas” (“We also want roses”) by Alina Marazzi opens up for us an intimate understanding of the social upheavals experienced by the Italian feminist movement in the 60s and 70s; the Margarida Cardoso film “Kuxa Kanema” revisits the archives of Mozambique’s socialist project and analyses the forces that nurtured the first steps towards a tradition of film in Mozambique; and filmmaker Manthia Diawara documents the questioning and creative process caused by the abrupt disappearance of African colonial architectural heritage, taken off the the Westeran art market.
